A. Resident Magistrates, District Officers, & Divisional Commissioners (by District/ Division)

Note: The title DISTRICT COMMISSIONER (to replace Resident Magistrate) is said to have been official from 1936, but was in practice used from 1930. There is also some confusion over the use of the terms District Commissioner (DC) and District Officer (DO). Technically the DC was simply the most senior DO responsible to the Resident Commissioner for the District, but in practice the term DO was (and is today) usually confined to the DC's assistant officers.

1. ASSISTANT COMMISSIONERS/DIVISIONAL COMMISSIONERS

Note: Assistant Commissioners to 1923 were in practice Assistant Resident Commissioners. From 1891-1923 the AC (Southern Protectorate) was based at Fort Gaberones; from 1891-1903/4 the AC (Northern Protectorate) at Old Palapye and 1903/4-23 at Francistown. The division between South and North was revived in 1950, with Senior District Officers in charge of each at Lobatse (South) and Francistown (North), becoming Divisional Commissioners from 1954 until 1963 when the posts were abolished as redundant. The two Divisions were equivalent to Provinces in other colonies, and Divisional Commissioners were equivalent to Provincial Commissioners.
