After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, the west seemed to be triumphant, with the United States the unchallenged sole superpower, and a European Union bringing about peace and prosperity in the long-divided Europe. But in the last decade the west has been plunged into crisis, with a migration crisis, terrorism, Britain deciding to leave the EU, and an unprecedented American election in which the winner angrily denounced the status quo. How did the west reach this situation? What next? How will it affect Botswana and the rest of the world?
The course will be based on student seminars (no exam) and will focus on three key topics, seen in historical perspective:
