Photo gallery: family and friends, part 2

Bosele Sianana and Vernon Gibberd both worked with Bessie on agricultural projects. Bosele was Bessie's best friend, co-builder of the Boiteko garden, and principal teacher of Tswana customs. Vernon, an outstanding English agronomist in Radisele and Serowe, has a starring role in Rain Clouds.

Patrick Cullinan befriended Bessie early in her writing career in Cape Town and many times thereafter; in 2005 he published a book of their correspondence. Martin Morolong, headmaster of Swaneng Primary School attended by Howard Head, was a good neighbour and a good friend.

Pelonomi Venson Moitoi attended Swaneng School and was a rare student who sought out Bessie for help in creative writing. She is currently Botswana's Minister of Science and Communications. Tom Holzinger was a close friend of Bessie's in the early 1970s. He offers comic relief in A Question of Power.

George Hallett is perhaps Cape Town's most famous photographer, documenting the life of the city for several decades. He shot the cover photos for the African Writers Series. Ruth Forchhammer was Bessie's friend and neighbour in the 1980s; at the end of 1986 she began the work of sorting and cataloging Bessie's papers.
